Admitted to Faculty of Advocates, 1970; Lecturer in Criminal Law and Criminology, Edinburgh University, 1969-73; Lecturer in Scots Law, Edinburgh University, 1973-74; Member, Longford Commission, 1972; Church of Scotland: Elder, 1967 (now at Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland Kirk), Reader, 1969, elected Member, Assembly Council, 1981-85, Senior Chaplain to Rt. Rev. John Cairns, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, 1999-00; called to the English Bar (Middle Temple), 1990; joined Chambers of Edmund Lawson, QC, 1991; appointed QC in Scotland, 1992; President, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary Samaritan Society, since 1992; Convener, General Assembly of the Church of Scotland's Committee on Chaplains to Her Majesty's Forces, since 2002.
